Northwestern Michigan College
Northwestern
Michigan College (NMC) was the first comprehensive community college
chartered in the State of Michigan. Since its founding in 1951, NMC has
provided quality, affordable access to higher education for learners of all
ages and backgrounds. NMC is integrally woven into the economic, social and
cultural fabric of the region, providing leadership and support for key
initiatives that shape our communities and prepare our learners for rich and
meaningful lives.
NMC's vision is to be the resource of choice for higher education, lifelong learning and cultural experiences. NMC will be an essential contributor to quality of life and a vibrant economy. We will demonstrate collaborative and inventive approaches to education and training for liberal studies, careers, interests and emerging learner markets.
Northwestern Michigan College is a publicly funded
community college that serves people, organizations and businesses
throughout the Grand Traverse region. We serve more than 50,000 learners
annually. NMC offers associates degrees and professional certificates and,
through our University Center, 10 partner universities grant baccalaureate,
graduate and doctoral degrees. NMC's extensive extended education program
offers a vast array of non-credit classes to more than 10,000 local
residents annually.
Insurance Certificate Program
The new Business program will offer three Certificates, each with a concentration in these areas:
-
Personal Insurance
-
Life and Health Insurance
-
Commercial Insurance
“The insurance industry has had a shortage of high quality younger employees to fill gaps created by changes in the way the industry operates over the last 10-15 years,” said Mark Priskorn of the Fawcett Dopke Agency. “Careers in the insurance industry offer competitive entry-level positions that will reward people who aspire to positions with almost unlimited earning potential.”
The three Certificates are designed to build on one another. The Level I Certificate, in addition to a course in Personal Insurance, includes Accounting Principles, Introduction to Business, Computers in Business, and English Composition. The program also is designed so it can be an area of concentration for those seeking an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration.
“This was an industry-led, industry-supported initiative, and I’m pleased to see NMC responding promptly and appropriately,” [former] Trustee Elaine Wood said.
Several area insurance agencies worked with Business faculty member Mary Ann Linsell to develop the curriculum. They also have committed more than $4,500 in scholarships to assist students entering the program. (Please speak to NMC about the scholarships referenced here.)
NMC's Insurance Program has three levels, each one building upon knowledge from the previous level. Click here for details on the requirements for each level.
